Democracy and Governance

Achieving Democracy and Good Governance are among the prerequisites for sustainable development in the Arab region.  Good governance requires the establishment of a decision making process that is participatory, transparent and accountable, effective and equitable, and promotes the rule of law. Such a process must ensures that political, social and economic priorities are based on broad consensus in society and that the voices of the poorest and the most vulnerable are heard in decision-making over the allocation of development resources.  CARD adopts the United Nations’ democratic governance principles as fundamental to the attainment of human sustainable development.

The D&G Unit at CARD aims to provide research services and capacity building to civil society, government, and stake holders in the Arab region that can help achieve good governance through the following specialty areas:
